About this Work of Art ~
"The
Place" is
a very special oil painting created by Laszlo
Tar in 1957. This was Mr. Tar's first painting created in the United
States. Laszlo Tar entered the United States with his family in
1956, with the help of the American Red Cross. The American Red
Cross operated four of the largest refugee centers in Austria and
helped over 30,000 Hungarian refugees at a reception center at
Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Laszlo Tar and his family emigrated to
the United States during the 1956 revolt against
Communism
in
Hungary.
They arrived in Camp
Kilmer (New Jersey) with no money or possessions and after being
employed for a short period by Wilber B. Driver Company, as
a factory worker,
Mr. Tar saved enough to purchase a simple set of oil paints and
easle. He attached a sheet of canvas to
a cut
of
masonite
that was left by the previous tenant in their small apartment in
Belleville, New Jersey. For a mixing palette, he used a cooking
pot lid. The scene is historic
Branch Brook Park in Newark,
New Jersey.
This
lovely
winter
scene
is
a true masterpiece and knowing the story behind it makes it all
the more wonderful.
