About this Work of Art ~
"Gold
Street"
was created by Laszlo Tar in 1964. Located downtown, Gold
Street is located on the east side, near the Brooklyn
Bridge. The pointed building is NOT the Empire State Building
-- it is in fact the Woolworth Building.
Before the World Trade Center or the EmpireState Building, there was the Cathedral of Commerce. This was the Woolworth Building – the world’s tallest when built - and for 16 years after. It is said that the Reverend S. Parkes Cadman dedicated the Woolworth Building as a “Cathedral of Commerce” at its official opening on April 23, 1913.
Laszlo Tar would
travel (by foot and subway) throughout Manhattan to paint and draw. On this day, over 40 years ago, he found
this perfect city skyline, street scene.
The
original is a watercolor and the fine print is a perfect
replica, signed and numbered by the artist.
